October 23, 2007 - The Mold Fund Campaign
At the August Board Meeting, several Board members reported that they had received inquiries from the membership as to whether there would be a fund established to help pay off the line of credit loan we used to purchase the Cambridge molds acquired from Summit Art Glass. They were looking for a directed instrument to make a donation for that specific purpose. Hearing this level of interest, the Board of Directors voted to establish a Mold Fund Campaign with a goal of liquidating the $50,000 loan by the end of this year. To jump start this campaign, the Board allocated $25,000 from the operating fund to cut the loan amount in half. Thus, the goal is to raise $25,000 by the end of the year. Several Board members immediately agreed to support the campaign and their efforts alone may constitute upwards of 10-20% of the support required. In turn they encourage other members to match their efforts at any level of support.
This is a historic time. The Cambridge molds owned by Summit Art Glass and the resultant reproductions were the bane of collectors for many years. This is particularly true for the many Caprice collectors. We are so fortunate we were able to consummate a transaction to buy these important historical items and to ensure they will never be reproduced again. Elsewhere in this issue you will read about our outstanding August work day project to clean and inventory the molds. It was an incredible display of cooperation and teamwork. We stand on the verge of having acquired these molds, transported them, cleaned them, inventoried them and paid for them in just over one year. Remarkable!
Your support in contributing and being a part of this campaign is greatly appreciated. To assist your giving, CLICK HERE to get to the printable form. We thank you for your interest and continuing generosity.
September 10, 2007 - Remembering Georgia Otten
Frank and Vicki Wollenhaupt have written a tribute to Georgia Otten, long time member of NCC and the Miami Valley Study Group, and friend to everyone she met. It is located on our members-only pages, which can be accessed by all NCC members. You will need the username/password for the members-only site to read the tribute to Georgia.
August 29, 2007 - Call for Auction Consignments
It's time to prepare your lists of glass that you choose to send to the Annual Auction. Right now, we are only asking for lists, not the actual glass itself. Our Auction page provides the instructions in full.
The Annual Auction is one of the major fund-raising activities of the NCC. It's a chance for collectors to sell off some "extra" pieces (if such a thing actually exists ...), an opportunity for NCC to raise money for the Museum (the NCC gets a 20% commission on each sale), and an opportunity for collectors to bid on and win some really great piece(s) of Cambridge Glass. Please consider participating by either consigning (or donating) glass, or by bidding when the Auction takes place during the first weekend of March.
July 25, 2007 - Bad News Monday
Monday, July 23rd brought word that two of our most active members had lost their battles with cancer. Dennis Snyder, our long-time Treasurer (until last year), passed away Sunday night in North Carolina. Then, Georgia Otten passed away Monday morning at about 5:30 in Dayton, Ohio. The enthusiastic Georgia was a frequent contributor to the Crystal Ball, an active member of our Miami Valley Study Group and a former Convention co-chairperson. Dennis was an accountant by trade and a master gardener. He built many of the sound financial principles that allowed NCC to acquire our new museum after the flood of 1998. Both Georgia and Dennis were treasures for NCC and will be sorely missed.
July 1, 2007 - Convention was wonderful !
Our 34th Annual Convention was a huge success. There were 18 first-time attendees and lots of repeat attendees. The events were well-planned and well attended. We all enjoyed the Seminar on Morgantown Glass by Leora Leasure, and many people commented on how nice it was to learn about other companies and their products. You can read all about the Convention in the next issue of the Crystal Ball. If you weren't there, you missed something special.
May 31, 2007 - Scotty Dog Bookends are now available.
Crystal Frosted Scotty We have just received a shipment of the new Scotty Dog bookends from Mosser Glass Co. in crystal opalescent. These are available in addition to the cobalt and cobalt-frosted Scotties that have been on sale for a while now. Check out the new Scotties and consider purchasing a pair of these beauties - they will enhance your collection and help fund the NCC. The price is $100 per pair, plus shipping. They will also be available at the Convention June 27-30 (and, of course, if you come to Convention, you won't have to pay shipping and you'll get to have a whole lot of fun!). See you there.
